As we approach the end of 2024, Avert’s work to transition our core brands to partners in East and Southern Africa is also wrapping up successfully. This means our programme work is ending and most of our staff team will be finishing up when we break for Christmas.

From all of us, we wanted to say a huge thank you for your support to Avert and our aims, whether that’s been as a valued staff member, user of our products, trusted contractor, donor or supporter, or partner or critical friend. Avert would not have been able to achieve what it did over its 38 years without the many people and organisations who supported and championed our work along the way. Together we made a positive impact on the lives of millions of people.

It's not just an end, but also a new beginning While Avert’s own programmes stop at the end of 2024, the work continues on through our takeover partners. You can read interviews with OPHID taking forward Boost in Southern Africa, LVCT Health taking forward Himarika in East Africa, and Kenya Comms Hub taking forward Be in the KNOW across the African region. Read first hand their aspirations for the brands.

And don’t be a stranger to them! They are taking forward the flame and will be continuing to build the sexual health literacy of individuals and community health workers, and to support informed choices around sex, sexual health, and HIV.

Understanding Avert’s legacy As we move to close the organisation over the coming months, we’ve published ‘An independent voice: Avert’s contribution to the global HIV response 1986-2024’. It’s a wonderful celebration of Avert’s work over its 38-year lifetime – from funding early AIDS research in the 1980s that others wouldn’t or couldn’t, to running the Avert.org information site that reached over 300 million people, and using behaviour change theory and human centred design to develop the brands we have now handed over.

You can also find a short video timeline of key moment’s in Avert’s history as well as a visual celebration of our work.

A much reduced staff team will still be around at Avert until 31st March 2025 as we wrap things up and close down the charity, so we’ll stay in touch through periodic updates on Avert.info, LinkedIn and Facebook. We will also be publishing a learning report on our transition journey to support other organisations in our sector who are considering a similar strategy.

Thanks again for your support.
